Every machine flying across the cover is one of Leonardo’s dreams. Here are the designs — and what became of them.
—— 手稿より(鳥の飛翔に関する手稿・53歳ごろ)“A bird is an instrument working according to mathematical law, which it is within the power of man to reproduce.”— From his notebooks (Codex on the Flight of Birds, c. age 53)
His first dream was to become the bird itself: a pilot flapping great wings with levers and pedals. Most of his flight studies are of these machines — until he realized human muscle would never be enough.
If muscle is not enough, ride the wind. Late in life he concluded that soaring — wings held still — was the way to fly. That is why the glider on our cover never flaps.
“The great bird will take its first flight from the back of the great swan, filling the universe with amazement.”
— From his notebooks
He called his machine “the great bird” and even named the mountain it would launch from.
As a screw bites into wood, a spinning spiral sail should bite into the air and climb. The ancestor of the helicopter — which first flew about 440 years later.
“With a tent of close-woven cloth, a man may throw himself from any height without injury.”
— From his notebooks
In 2000, a parachute built exactly to his design was tested from the sky — and landed its jumper safely, 500 years on.
This one is not in his notebooks — a modern artist’s dream sailing the same sky. The other five are real. That is astonishing enough.
A spring-driven cart that moves on its own. A replica built in 2004 from this very drawing actually ran — it is often called the ancestor of the automobile.
At 63 he built a walking mechanical lion for the King of France. It walked to the king, and its chest opened to reveal lilies. No drawing survives — only the story.
A bridge of interlocking logs — no nails, no rope. The heavier the load, the tighter it locks. The sketch above is his own.
A page from the Madrid Codices: machines broken down into their elements — gears, springs, screws. The reversed writing is his famous mirror script.
A self-supporting bridge, canal locks whose principle survives today, a leather diving suit, an odometer — his notebooks are packed with machines for land and water, too.
Flapping became the drone, soaring the glider, rotation the helicopter, the cloth tent the parachute — every one of his dreams eventually flew.
